Perennials [annuals]; eglandular. Trichomes stalked, usually dendritic, stellate, or forked, sometimes mostly simple. Cauline leaves [rarely absent], petiolate, subsessile, or sessile; blade base not auriculate, margins usually pinnately or palmately lobed, sometimes entire [dentate]. Racemes usually ebracteate, often elongated in fruit. Flowers actinomorphic; sepals suberect to spreading [erect], lateral pair not saccate basally; petals white, pink, or purple [yellow], claw present, distinct; filaments unappendaged, not winged; pollen 3-colpate. Fruits silicles or siliques, dehiscent, unsegmented, 4-angled, angustiseptate, terete, or subterete [latiseptate]; ovules 4–30[–numerous] per ovary; style distinct [obsolete]; stigma entire [rarely slightly 2-lobed]. Seeds uniseriate [biseriate]; cotyledons accumbent or incumbent.

North America, Europe, Asia.
