Flowering stems erect, 25–60 cm. Leaves of basal stems mostly 2-ranked; blade lanceolate to oblanceolate. Inner sepals elliptic-ovate, apex subacute. Capsules subglobose, shorter than calyx.


Phenology: Flowering summer; fruiting late summer–fall.
Habitat: Dry sandy soil of open woodlands, streambanks, lake margins
Elevation: 10–200 m

Discussion

Variety laurentiana is found primarily along the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa rivers and their tributaries.
