Plants 0.3–10 cm. Stem leaves loosely incurved-twisted when dry, erect-spreading to spreading when moist, oblong, 1.2–1.8 mm; margins entire; apex acute, apiculus broad, short; costa ending near apex, abaxial surface covered by quadrate papillose cells at apex; basal laminal cells short-rectangular; distal cells 7–13 µm, smooth, walls somewhat thick. Specialized asexual reproduction by fusiform to elliptic gemmae, longitudinal walls absent. Sexual condition dioicous. Sporophytes unknown.
Habitat: Trees
Elevation: low elevations
Distribution

Discussion
Zygodon menziesii is distinguished from all other species of Zygodon in the flora area by its smooth laminal cells. This species is retained in Zygodon, but it probably belongs in a separate genus, Codonoblepharon Schwägrichen. In the flora area, Z. menziesii is known only from the San Francisco area.
