Culms and leaves with Kranz (chlorocyperoid) anatomy. Inflorescences: spikes loose to dense, ovoid to cylindric; rachilla articulate at base of each scale. Spikelets: mature spikelets breaking into 1-fruited segments, each including internode of rachilla; floral scales persistent, achene clasped by rachilla wings. Flowers: stamens 3; stigmas 3. Achenes trigonous, slightly dorsiventrally flattened.

Distribution

Pantropical and warm-temperate regions.
