Stems simple or branched, to 10 cm; branches 1–6 pairs, from middle cauline nodes; cauline internode lengths 1 times subtending leaves. Leaves: blade narrowly oblong or narrowly oblanceolate, 2–8(–10) mm, margins sparsely dentate, teeth 1 or 2(or 3) pairs, apices acute. Inflorescences beginning at node 5–10; proximal internode lengths 0.8–1.5 times subtending bracts; bracts green, sometimes purplish, slightly broader than leaves, oblong to lanceolate, length 2.5+ times width, 4–8 mm, surfaces glabrous, teeth 1–3 pairs, longer or much longer than wide, apices narrowly acute, sometimes aristate. Flowers: corolla white, adaxial lip lilac, 5–7 mm, abaxial lip slightly exceeding or equal to adaxial. Capsules oblong to elliptic-oblong, 4–5 mm, margins eciliate or short-ciliate, apex truncate, retuse, or emarginate. 2n = 44 (Ireland).
Phenology: Flowering mid summer–fall.
Habitat: Short turf on shallow soils over limestone.
Elevation: 0–200 m.
