Leaves not leathery, cauline blade elliptic to spatulate or ovate. Thyrses: proximal bracts ovate to lanceolate. Flowers: calyx lobes 1.6–3.5(–4) × 1.4–2 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Jul.
Habitat: Canyons and rocky slopes, pinyon-juniper woodlands, pine forests.
Elevation: 2100–2700 m.

Discussion

Variety cardinalis is known from the Capitan and Sacramento mountains in Lincoln and Otero counties.
