Thyrses: proximal bracts ovate to lanceolate. Flowers: calyx lobes lanceolate, (3.2–)5–7.5 mm.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jun.
Habitat: Rocky or gravelly soils, slopes and banks, montane grasslands.
Elevation: 400–1700 m.
Discussion
Variety polyphyllus is known from the upper Clark Fork River valley of east-central Idaho (Lemhi County) and west-central Montana (Beaverhead, Deer Lodge, Granite, Jefferson, Madison, Missoula, Powell, and Silver Bow counties). Compared to var. nitidus, it generally is taller and has relatively longer, narrower leaves, bracts, and calyx lobes.
