Stems 10–50 cm. Leaves sparsely to densely retrorsely hairy, hairs appressed, white, scalelike, cauline 4–26 × 0.5–1.5 mm, blade linear. Flowers: staminode: distal 3–5 mm densely pilose, hairs golden yellow or yellow, to 1 mm, rest of distal 1–4 mm sparsely to moderately pilose. 2n = 16.

Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Rocky slopes, sagebrush shrublands, pinyon-juniper woodlands.
Elevation: 1400–2900 m.

Discussion

Variety linarioides is known from Arizona (Apache, Cochise, Coconino, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, Navajo, and Yavapai counties) and western New Mexico (Cibola, Doña Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, McKinley, and Socorro counties). I. Méndez Larios and J. L. Villaseñor Ríos (2001) listed Penstemon linarioides for Baja California and Sonora, Mexico. D. D. Keck (1937) named plants with more compact, heathlike leaves, ascending stems, and decumbent rootstocks as subsp. compactifolius; he stated the subspecies was limited to the vicinity of Flagstaff and intergraded with both subsp. sileri and var. viridis D. D. Keck. Plants with leaves similar to subsp. compactifolius are encountered elsewhere and appear to be a confluent phenotypic expression of var. linarioides.
