Revision as of 20:06, 16 December 2019

Stems ascending to erect, 22–70(–90) cm. Cauline leaves: blade lanceolate to oblanceolate. Thyrses 5–21 cm, verticillasters 4–11. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, apex acute to cuspidate, rarely acuminate; corolla 16–25(–28) mm. 2n = 16.

Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Clayey soils, sagebrush shrublands.
Elevation: 1400–2900 m.

Discussion

Variety subglaber is easily confused with individuals of Penstemon subglaber with sparsely glandular-pubescent corollas; calyx lobe shape and anther morphology usually distinguish the two reliably. Penstemon holmgrenii S. L. Clark is an invalid name that applies here.
