Herbs, perennial; unarmed. Leaves alternate, pinnately compound; stipules persistent, free or adnate to petiole; venation pinnate to nearly palmate basally. Flowers: perianth and androecium perigynous; epicalyx bractlets absent; hypanthium flat to concave; torus inconspicuous, sometimes enlarged in fruit; carpels 5–12, distinct, free, styles terminal to subterminal, distinct; ovules 2, apical, superposed. Fruits aggregated achenes; styles persistent, not elongate.
Distribution
North America, Eurasia, n Africa, introduced in Pacific Islands (New Zealand), Australia.
Discussion
Genus 1, species 15 (4 in the flora).
The base chromosome number for Ulmarieae is x = 7.
