Plants perennial; rhizomatous or stoloniferous. Culms wiry; nodes swollen, villous (especially on the stolons). Ligules membranous, papery. Panicles contracted; branches spikelike, appressed, 1-sided; pedicels 0.1-2.5 mm. Spikelets ellipsoid, paired. Lower glumes 3/4 - 4/5 as long as the spikelets, 5-7-veined; upper glumes and lower lemmas 7-11-veined, blunt; lower florets stami-nate; lower paleas large; upper florets large, with tiny hairs near the bases and apices, x = 10.

Discussion

Panicum sect. Obtusa includes only Panicum obtusum.
