Stems 17–65 cm, glabrous. Cauline leaves 5–8 pairs, blade ovate to lanceolate. Thyrses: proximal bracts ovate to lanceolate. Flowers: corolla blue to lavender or pink, 14–17 mm.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jun.
Habitat: Sandy soils, blackbrush, sagebrush, and pinyon-juniper woodlands.
Elevation: 1400–2300 m.
Distribution
Ariz., Colo., N.Mex., Utah.
Discussion
Although variety venosus shares many morphologic features with var. caudatus, it generally exhibits more variation in corolla color than var. caudatus, and the varieties are largely allopatric except possibly in north-central New Mexico.
