Leaves: stipular glands present only at proximal nodes. Flowers: stamens (3–)4–5 mm; styles (2–)2.7–3.3(–4) mm.
Phenology: Flowering Jun–Sep.
Habitat: Sandy, cindery, or loamy soils.
Elevation: 1500–2800 m.
Distribution
Alta., Ariz., Colo., Mont., Nev., N.Mex., Tex., Utah, Wyo., Mexico (Baja California, Sonora).
Discussion
Variety australe occurs in the Rocky Mountains from southern Alberta to southern Arizona and western Texas and Sonora. It is disjunct in the high elevations of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, Baja California.
