Phenology: Flowering Mar–Jun.
Habitat: Pinyon-juniper woodlands, sagebrush and other shrub communities, open deserts, dry washes and flats, waste places, streambeds, roadsides, sandy areas, rock slides, stony slopes
Elevation: -50-2700 m

In subsp. lasiocarpum there is considerable variation in the density and location of trichomes on the fruit valve; in some populations (e.g., Rollins & Munz 6741, GH), the trichomes are present over the entire valve; in others they are restricted as a fringe along part of the fruit margin.
