Plants 0.15–1.8 m, not clonal or clonal by layering. Largest medial blades hypostomatous, abaxial surface glaucous. Catkins from lateral buds. Staminate flowers: filaments glabrous or hairy. Pistillate flowers: abaxial nectary sometimes present, then distinct or connate to adaxial and forming a cup; ovary glaucous or not, glabrous or puberulent to very densely long-silky, hairs white or white and ferruginous, flattened.
Distribution
North America, Eurasia.
