|discussion=<p>Species identification is virtually impossible without fertile material. The common name water-clover refers to the resemblance of the leaves to those of clover (Trifolium spp., Fabaceae); pepperwort refers to the sporocarp, which approximates a peppercorn in size and shape.</p><!--
