T. Nuttall (1822) included <i>G. heterophylla</i> in <i>Liatris</i> sect. Leptoclinium (as <i>L. fruticosa</i> Nuttall). <i>Garberia</i> is distinct by its shrubby habit and karyotype (L. O.
