|discussion=<p>Variety scariosus occurs mostly in the Aquarius, Fish Lake, and Wasatch plateaus. Populations are documented in Carbon, Duchesne, Emery, Grand, Juab, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier, Uintah, and Wayne counties, Utah. A collection from the East Tavaputs Plateau in western Garfield County, Colorado (R. E. Umber, M. L. Moorman & W. Robertson 1336, RM), appears to be this taxon, though it is somewhat disjunct from other populations. It has obscurely glandular-pubescent calyces and corollas, and pollen sacs ca. 2.4 mm.</p>
