Thyrses: proximal bracts orbiculate to ovate, rarely lanceolate. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, 3–6.5 mm. 2n = 16.
Phenology: Flowering May–Jun(–Jul).
Habitat: Gumbo hills, shortgrass prairies, montane grasslands, roadcut banks.
Elevation: 200–2500 m.
Distribution
Alta., B.C., Man., Sask., Mont., N.Dak., S.Dak., Wyo.
Discussion
Variety nitidus occurs widely in the northwestern Great Plains and at low elevations in the Central, Northern, and Canadian Rocky mountains.
