Shrubs, 0.1–7 m. Buds alba-, arctica-, or caprea-type, or intermediate. Leaves: stipules on late ones minute rudiments or foliaceous; largest medial blade (sometimes amphistomatous), 1.2–7 times as long as wide, adaxial surface not glaucous. Staminate flowers: filaments glabrous or hairy. Pistillate flowers: adaxial nectary shorter than, equal to, or longer than stipe; stipe 0–3.5 mm; ovary glabrous or sparsely to very densely hairy; stigmas with flat, non-papillate abaxial surface, cylindrical, or plump, 0.1–0.8 mm.

North America, Eurasia.
Discussion
Species 24 (17 in the flora).
This section was treated by R. D. Dorn (1975) as sect. Cordatae. In 1995, he recognized two subsections: Cordatae and Luteae. These two subsections are treated here as sections Hastatae and Cordatae, respectively.
