Fruiting pedicels 0.2–0.4(–0.6) mm wide, usually less than 3 times as wide as thick. Nectar glands toothlike, 0.1–0.2 mm. Fruit valves hirsute or minutely fringed on margin, trichomes not pustular-based. 2n = 32.
Phenology: Flowering Mar–Jun.
Habitat: Pinyon-juniper woodlands, sagebrush and other shrub communities, open deserts, dry washes and flats, waste places, streambeds, roadsides, sandy areas, rock slides, stony slopes
Elevation: -50-2700 m
Distribution
Ariz., Calif., Colo., Nev., N.Mex., Tex., Utah, Mexico (Baja California, Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora).
Discussion
In subsp. lasiocarpum there is considerable variation in the density and location of trichomes on the fruit valve; in some populations (e.g., Rollins & Munz 6741, GH), the trichomes are present over the entire valve; in others they are restricted as a fringe along part of the fruit margin.
