Shrubs, 50–150 cm. Stems with slender branches from bases, hairy, developing fissured barks. Leaves cauline; petioles 6–12 mm; blades silvery green, ovate to deltate, 25–40 mm, apices acute, faces ± silvery-canescent. Heads borne singly. Peduncles canescent. Involucres 8–14 mm. Phyllaries ovate. Ray florets 14–25; corolla laminae 10–25 mm. Disc corollas yellow, 5–6 mm. Cypselae 5–7 mm; pappi usually 0, rarely of 1–2 bristlelike awns. 2n = 36.
Phenology: Flowering Feb–Jul.
Habitat: Open areas, rocky slopes, roadsides
Elevation: 800–1500 m
Distribution
Calif., Nev., Mexico (Baja California).
Discussion
The epithet actoni (sometimes spelled actonii) is from a place name (Acton, Los Angeles County, California); actoni is correct.
