Caudices taprooted, suberect to erect, woody. Stems (1–)2–6+, usually canescent, rarely glabrescent. Leaf blades: margins usually serrate-dentate, sometimes deeply dissected, midribs winged.

Phenology: Flowering mid May–mid Jun.
Habitat: Dry disturbed sites, roadsides, wooded areas, dry or drying streambeds
Elevation: 200–1700 m

Discussion

Variety eurycephala evidently reproduces extensively from creeping rootstocks. Some specimens from Butte, Plumas, and Yuba counties lack lobed leaves.
