|discussion=<p>Most plants of <i></i></i>var.<i><i> flavescens</i> have yellow to pale orange inflorescences, but in some populations, such as near Wells, <i>Nevada</i>, the inflorescence can vary to pink, reddish pink, white, or magenta. Variety flavescens is associated with <i>Artemisia arbuscula</i>, its likely host plant, and is often found at higher elevations than <i>Castilleja chromosa</i> (N. H. Holmgren 1984). The variety is found in southeastern Idaho, eastern <i>Nevada</i>, and western Utah. Recent collections from extreme eastern Mono and Modoc counties suggest that <i></i></i>var.<i><i> flavescens</i> may also occur in California, but the identity of these populations has yet to be fully verified.</p>
