Denisophytum pauciflorum

Shrubs to 2 m; prickles inevident to conspicuous, mostly nodal and paired, those of leaves usually in stipellate position. Leaves 4–10 cm; stipules not seen; leaflet blades elliptic to obovate, 5–14 × 3–10 mm, surfaces finely punctate, only midvein evident. Inflorescences relatively small, terminal. Pedicels jointed. Flowers shortly stipitate distal to hypanthial cup; calyx irregular, abaxial lobe cucullate, 5–6 mm, investing others in bud; petals 6–9 mm, shortly pilose. Fruits opening from adaxial suture, 2–4 × 1 cm, obliquely beaked, coriaceous. Seeds 4–6 × 4–5 mm. 2n = 24.
Phenology: Flowering Feb–Aug.
Habitat: Pinelands, palmetto-pine woodlands, hammocks, roadsides.
Elevation: 0–10 m.
Distribution
Fla., West Indies (Cuba).
Discussion
Denisophytum pauciflorum is known from Monroe County, where it occurs on Big Pine, Cudjoe, and Summerland keys.
